Our Story: All In Mentoring

The Waverly Mentoring Steering Committee was formed and held its first meeting on March 2, 2021. Over the next three months, the steering committee refined the scope and goals of a local mentoring agency, decided on an agency name, developed its vision and mission statements, created a logo and developed a plan to address funding and operations. The committee formally organized All In Mentoring and elected its first Board of Directors on June 29, 2021. In November of 2021, AIM hired its first Executive Director, Kori Chamberlin. On February 10, 2022, AIM initiated its first two matches. At this point, we have 25 matches meeting in schools across the Waverly-Shell Rock area.

AIM hosted its' first match event

As part of our program's current guidelines, all contact between mentees and mentors is to be done at the child's school or at an AIM-hosted event. Over the summer, AIM held a match event at Kohlmann Park to allow matches to see each other and connect. It was heartwarming to see all of the smiles, hugs and excitement as the matches greeted each other. Matches enjoyed a photo scavenger hunt, played group games, and ate a meal together. AIM hopes to continue to host a summer event every year as a way to allow matches to reconnect throughout the summer and have the opportunity to meet outside of the school setting.

Workshop: Goal Setting with Your Mentee

AIM's Director hosted a post-match mentor workshop on goal setting on November 17. Using tools from Education Northwest, mentors learned about the importance of goal setting, how to use a mentee's strengths to help them form goals and specific activities to do with their mentees to keep goal setting age-appropriate and fun. Mentors gained knowledge and enjoyed networking with each other.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who does AIM serve?
AIM serves kids who are referred by their school or whose parents enroll them in the program. We have no eligibility requirements other than that they be in grades Kindergarten-6th grade when they start. Kids in our program come from a variety of backgrounds and are referred for a variety of needs: some are struggling socially with their peers, some come from single parent homes, some have low self-esteem, and some just need another positive adult in their life.

What does it take to be a mentor?
Our “AIM” is for all of our mentors to reflect our four core values (caring, genuine, committed, and respectful), in hopes they will pass those values on to their student match. A mentor is to serve as a supporter, friend, and role model to their assigned mentee. AIM mentors undergo background checks, are thoroughly interviewed, and are continually supported to help them make the most of their time with their match.
